Hamilton, William of Bangour

Hamilton, William of Bangour
(1704-1754)
He was born at Bangour, near Linlithgow, son of a Scottish barrister, and succeed to the family estate in 1750. He supported the Stuart cause and after the Battle of Culloden (1746) was forced into hiding in the Highlands. He escaped to France an ill man and he died in Lyons of tuberculosis. His body was buried in the Abbey Church, Holyrood, Edinburgh. William Wordsworth and Sir Walter Scott were full of praise for Hamilton's work. An unauthorized collection, Poems on Several Occasions, was published by Foulis of Glasgow in 1748-1749 and reissued as Hamilton of Bangour's Poems. The Poems and Songs of William Hamilton of Bangour was published in 1850. Some of his poems: "A Soliloquy Wrote in June 1746," "Contemplation, or the Triumph of Love," "Episode of the Thistle," "Gladsmuir," "Seven Familiar Epistles," "The Braes of Yarrow," "The Faithful Few: An Ode," "The Parting of Hector and Andromache."
